What is Apple Pay?
Apple Pay is a smartphone application available on Apple’s newest iPhone® model (the iPhone 6) which allows you to pay a merchant using your mobile phone instead of a credit or debit card. To pay, just hold your iPhone near the contactless reader, with your finger on Touch IDTM. A subtle vibration and beep will let you know that your payment information was successfully sent. The authorization is sent wirelessly to the merchant terminal, and the transaction is posted to whichever debit or credit card account you have indicated as your preferred payment account within Apple Pay.
Where will Apple Pay work?
Currently, there are hundreds of thousands of merchant terminals in the United States that accept wireless transactions. This number is growing quickly and we expect to see this feature widely available within the next few years. Look for the )))) symbol on the merchant terminal at participating retailers. You can also use Apple Pay with select other Apple devices, such as certain versions of the iPad and the Apple Watch.
Is Apple Pay Secure?
Every time you hand over your credit or debit card to pay, your card number and identity are visible. With Apple Pay, instead of using your actual credit and debit card numbers when you add your card, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element, a dedicated chip in iPhone and Apple Watch. These numbers are never stored on Apple servers. When you make a purchase, the Device Account Number (alongside a transaction-specific dynamic security code) is used to process your payment. So your actual credit or debit card numbers are never shared by Apple with merchants or transmitted with payment.
Does Apple know what I am buying?
With Apple Pay, your payments are private. Apple doesn’t store the details of your transactions so they can’t be tied back to you (your most recent purchases are kept in Passbook however). Since you don't have to show your credit or debit card, you never reveal your name, card number or security code to the cashier when you pay in store. This additional layer of privacy helps ensure that your information stays with you.
How can I use my Direct Financial Debit and VISA cards with Apple Pay?
The most common way to use your Debit and Visa card with Apple Pay is to add them to your iPhone Passport Wallet.
Please remember to make your Direct Financial card the default payment account in Apple Pay. (Settings>Passbook>Default Card). This will ensure that you will enjoy the very low rates and the great rewards our card products offer, and you will be able to monitor your purchases on NEFCUOnline and with text alerts.
